Sheet piling, fill, and finished surface
The work began with sheet piling along the perimeter of the new pier area, establishing a robust retaining wall structure capable of withstanding the lateral pressures of both the fill material and ongoing vessel operations. Once the sheet piling was secured and anchored with fixing rods, the enclosed area was filled with gravel masses to build up the pier bed to the required level.
With the structural foundation in place, the surface was finished with asphalt and topped with a concrete touch plate.
The detail that matters
Railway bars in the touch plate
Integrated into the touch plate are railway bars running in the direction of approach, providing a smooth, durable sliding surface for the aft ramps of vessels when berthing. This detail is critical in working ports where ferries or ro-ro type vessels dock repeatedly throughout the day, and where wear on both the vessel ramp and the pier surface needs to be managed over a long service life.
